Roberto
Matthews is proof that it is never too late to start something new and
to excel at it. For most of his life Roberto has been a computer
technician and a mathematician. But at the age of 19, though he was a
Mathematics major, he fell in love with music and decided to take a few
classes. Later this fascination turned into passion when he double
majored in Music Education and Mathematics. Later on he continued his
studies at the University of New Orleans as an Accounting and Music
Performance double major.
Through
the years he has learned to meld his three passions: his faith, his
musical, and his technical loves. He is currently director of several
choirs at churches all over the Greater New Orleans area as well as full
time teacher at Andy Hymel's School of Music. He has also published two
music CDs at his own record studio, Musica Religiosa. But he is also a
bookkeeper for several small businesses and restaurants in the area. In
college he played both major and supporting roles in numerous operas
including Cosi Fan Tutti, The Magic Flute, and The Carmelites. He has had the distinct honor of studying under professors who are well
known and respected in their vocal field such as Mr. Philip & Mrs. Ellen Frohnmayer, and Mr. Dreux Montegut, who happens to be the music director
at St. Louis Cathedral in the heart of New Orleans.
Now, as a
vocal, piano, and guitar instructor, Roberto hopes to pass along the
idea to his students that age is not a hindrance to learning something
as wonderful and rewarding as music.
